Bucky, our adorable little Boston Terrier, is still not a very "good" dog, so our trainer suggested we crate him for a while when we're away - to better enforce our authority, I guess. So, I start putting him in his crate.
The first day, I came home, and he was wagging his little nub of a tail at the door. "Huh?" I thought. Upon inspecting the crate, he had somehow unzipped it from the inside and wiggled his way out.
Day 2: I was very careful to zip the crate tight. I come home and Bucky is, again, wagging his nub of a tail at the door. I go over to the crate, and he had chewed/ripped the zipper from the canvas, making a hole large enough to escape.
Over the weekend: I replace the canvas crate with a wire crate. It has locking doors. "There's no way he can get out of this!" we say.
Day 3: We come back (this time the honey is with me, so I have a witness) -- again, to find Bucky wagging his nub. We go inspect the crate.... and all the doors are still shut. The bottom tray has slipped forward, but there's no way he could fit through the 2" hole at the bottom.
This dog is Houdini, and he has officially outsmarted us.
Crating usually just ensures that you can enjoy your time away wouthout worrying about bucky shewing up something, and bucky can stay safe, no chewing up electric cords and stuff.....
I had that happen a few times with Teulu's crate....Mostly I came to the conclusion that it was me not latching it very correctly, but Bucky, could be houdini! some dogs are just talented that way!

Oh man! He's a total escape artist!! I hope he never teaches that to Penny!

[this is good] It would be funny if you set up a camera on the dog crate, so you can learn Bucky's escape method.
